Hong Kong Hotel Quarantined Because Of Swine Flu Scare

When a guest at a Hong Kong hotel from Mexico became ill, police moved in and sealed off the building not letting anyone in or out. This all out of fear of swine flu. (From Reuters)

Police wearing surgical masks sealed off the Metropark hotel on Friday night after test results on the 25-year-old Mexican man were confirmed, ordering approximately 200 guests and 100 staff to stay in the hotel for the next seven days.

The measures taken by the authorities in Hong Kong underscore the concern here about the new flu and the confirmed case, Asia’s first. Hong Kong was badly hit by the SARS virus in 2003 and has had many episodes of H5N1 bird flu for more than a decade.

Some are saying this is overstepping the bounds and carrying authority too far. Is it? Earlier this week we talked about the prospects of martial law being enforced and whether or not governments had the legal authority to do that.

It appears that the voracity of this influenza is much milder than first thought but the World Health Organization is still issuing warnings of caution and telling people not to become complacent.

A person complained of having flu-like symptoms on board a jet to Washington from Munich, and in order to take precautionary measures the plane was diverted to Logan International Airport in Boston.

A United Airlines flight from Munich to Washington has been diverted to Boston’s Logan International Airport because a female passenger complained of flu symptoms, an airport official said.

Flight 903, a 737 containing 245 passengers and 16 crew, has been isolated in the north cargo area of the airport, said airport spokesman Phil Orlandella.

One patient was removed from the plane and was being taken to Masachusetts General Hospital, said Jennifer Mehigan, a spokeswoman for Boston Emergency Medical Services. The other passengers are expected to stay on board and continue to Washington after refueling, airport officials said.

The Boston Globe has the report.
